HONORARY CONSUL GENERAL CORNER
Ramazan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is based on the paces of the moon, lunar calendar. During the month of Ramazan most Muslims fast, which means to refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, and indulging in anything that is in excess or ill-natured, from sunrise until sunset. Through fasting, Muslims learn to appreciate the privileges they are granted including the food, to develop empathy for those who are in need, and they also learn patience. During Ramazan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. Ramazan is also a time for sharing.
Apart from fasting, Ramazan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed.
The dates of Ramazan fall on a different calendar date each year, moving forward about eleven days each year as the Islamic calendar is 354 or 355 days.
The tradition is to eat fresh dates and to drink a glass of water after the fast. As the month of Ramazan comes to an end, Muslims prepare for the Holiday Celebration and buy new clothes and shoes, especially for the children.
